Have you heard of the beautiful French blogger Betty and her controversy with Zara? Wake up, before you miss out on this phenomenon… Betty is a 27 year old Parisian who shares her passion for fashion through her blog, which is visited about 40,000 times a day. The saga began 2 years ago….

On 22 May, Betty received over 700 comments for her new post “Zara, We Have a Problem”: fashion brand Zara was inspired by a photo of Betty taken in Miami, and used it as the basis for a drawing used for a t shirt. A dark-haired girl, looked over her spectacles, while wearing a jeans jacket, drinking through a straw and making a peace sign with her left hand….Just like the photo of Betty … what a mystery. But perhaps there is no problem, as since then, the French blogger has been working with lots of top fashion brands …

Dominating the galaxy typically evokes visions of science fiction stories and the delusions of grandeur of a depraved human race, who want to control the rest of humanity and all living things. The interesting thing is that science fiction is not always so unrealistic. The utopian or apocalyptic images serve as a warning, or as a way to express and reflect fears and anxieties of the present moment.

First there was Tavi Gevinson, the 13 year old style guru who conquered the US, Paris and Japan. But the story of Cecilia Cassini is even wackier. This cute teenager with her long blonde hair is not just obsessed with fashion – she also designs. She even sold her collection to the exclusive Fred Segal store in California! So how old is she? 17? 16? No! In fact she just turned 10. Please, she’s not even in Junior High yet!

A busy housewife in the kitchen pulls a Christ from his cross, washes it under running water and puts it in a baking tray, accompanied by potatoes and butter. The voiceover explains that after three days of cooking at moderate temperature, the Christ will walk out of the oven all by himself!

This short film is called “How to Cook a Christ” and is barely a minute long. It was made by singer Javier Krahe in the late 70s, and sprang out of the atmosphere of freedom, rebellion and provocation that followed the end of the Franco dictatorship. Krahe could hardly have imagined that this short was going to cause him problems more than thirty years later!

In 2004 the singer was interviewed by a Canal + program, which screened a few frames of the film during the interview. This outraged some Catholic viewers, particularly those associated with the Thomas More Law Center, which denounced Krahe and the program for “attacking religious sentiment”.

The friendship of the German artist Georg Baselitz and Belgian photographer Benjamin Katz began more than four decades ago and is now commemorated with an exhibition in Helsinki, which not only shows the last work of this neo-expressionist artist, but also will dedicate a space to Katz´s portraits of Baselitz, made in the last twenty years.

Museum Kunst Haus Wien in Vienna hosts a historical exhibition of the work of  Tina Modotti, noted Italian-American photographer. The exhibit runs from July 1 until 7 November. It will include her famous series “Women of Tehuantepec” as well as studies of plants, pictures and rare photos.

The path of Tina Modotti, who was born in 1896 in Udine, Italy, was filled with intrigue and suspense. She died in 1942 in Mexico, after having crossed the world to create art and to promote her radical political ideals. As a teenager she had immigrated to the United States with her family, and it was there she would meet Edward Weston. She was his model, assistant and lover for many years; perhaps part of the reason her work did not receive the attention it deserved for many years. Art critics dismissed her as just another muse. Today, we recognize that she was much more.

Stanley Kubrick is known as the great director of some of the most important films of the twentieth century. Without a doubt, he has been one of the most influential and inspiring figures, not only with regards to the cinema, but twentieth century arts in general. His film aesthetic was marked by the revolutionary concepts of the German theatre developed by Bertolt Brecht. Brecht´s epic theatre which promoted the idea that theatre is a representation of reality on a stage, and always should maintain its artificial and groundbreaking nature, to encourage a critical eye in the audience. Kubrick´s work is now seen as a turning point in the history of celluloid.
